Africa Handpump Borehole

Reliable water, built to last

Across parts of Zimbabwe and Malawi, access to clean water remains a daily challenge. Communities often rely on unsafe sources or travel long distances, placing health and livelihoods at constant risk.

Feed the World’s African handpump boreholes are designed as long term water solutions. Dug through difficult, rocky ground, these boreholes provide dependable access to clean water for entire communities, year after year.

How handpump boreholes work

Handpump boreholes are deep, mechanically simple water systems built for durability and ease of maintenance. Once installed, they can serve large populations with minimal ongoing cost.

Each borehole:

  • Provides clean water access to approximately 2,000 to 2,500 people
  • Is engineered to operate for 20 to 30 years
  • Is suited to hard and rocky terrain
  • Can be maintained locally with basic training and tools

This makes handpump boreholes one of the most cost effective and reliable water interventions available.

Why this approach matters

Clean water transforms daily life. With a reliable borehole:

  • Families no longer rely on unsafe water sources
  • Waterborne disease is reduced
  • Time spent collecting water is significantly decreased
  • Communities gain stability and resilience

At approximately three dollars per beneficiary over the life of the borehole, this is impact measured not just in years, but in generations.

Community centred and accountable

Boreholes are constructed in partnership with local communities and implementing partners who understand the terrain and long term needs.

Community members are involved in site selection, use, and maintenance, helping ensure the borehole remains functional and protected long after installation.

This approach prioritises ownership, accountability, and sustainability.
